My Otium is My Negotium
April 19, 2007The Greeks believed that only real men can spend time improving themselves. This means that real men can learn literature, write plays, talk rhetoric and other non-essential things for human survival.
Frickin' Pansies. Daisy smelling wussies.
What of people like me? People who's Otium (it's Latin from what I understand) is their Negotium. People who actually find fulfillment in doing their servile arts? See the Greeks considered people who earned a living as incomplete citizens of Greece. They would be poor, probably undereducated and practical. We'd be called slaves. Or barbarians. Perhaps.
