Kenya’s children

June 25, 2008

I read a post in Yahoo! News about what is happening in Kenya and, more importantly, to Kenya’s children.

Apparently Kenya is being torn apart with violence.  Current Kenyan violence has recently been contributed to land disputes. The militias have forced the children to collaborate, pay up or watch as their entire family is killed. Some of the children have already been tortured by the militias. The Kenyan government responded to militia disturbances with a crackdown. When the military was able to take over they then proceeded to torture the children as individuals assisting the militias, according to the news report.

I hope that I was able to properly condense the Kenyan situation in the above paragraph.

I think the situation is horrible. It is absolutely deplorable that children be used as soldiers or as torture victims. This isn’t merely a morality issue for the Kenyan army or the militia. The repercussions of their acts will resonate throughout Kenyan history. The world might face decades of Kenyans scarred because of their childhood experiences with death and torture. These children, without proper rehabilitation and therapy, might not mature into normal beings. As one Kenyan said in a different article “when you see someone die it stays with you”.

The social impact will be tremendous in Kenya. It just might perpetuate the violence in it. Families of the victims will be bent on revenge and survivors will face the world with distrust.

There will be economic effects as well. Having no children with a decent enough education, or with security of home, or family might stunt Kenyan economic growth in the coming years.

It will be difficult for the Kenyans to live this down but I believe that they can.

this is a prelude to the effects climate change will have on human society…

That is why problems in Africa are exacerbated. Like in darfur where the lack of water fueled the fire between the arabs and the natives.

This might spread to other countries where there is slowly a lack of resources….

The future seems dim

The life of a human is essentially about living with limited means. He just has to manage. Some just get pushed to the point of kill or be killed. I hope the violence can be reduced, if not stopped, as we go along. I think a little more common sense and a little less ideology or illogical hatred should be enough.
