Chapter III: Unemployment

October 28, 2008

At 3 pm that day my world ended.

I hung my uniform out to dry. As I walked out of McDonald’s I gave it one last look like Lot’s wife.

Ronald still stood there, one hand welcoming the other praising his establishment and his teeth, oh his teeth, bared to make a semblance of a smile. Now he looked menacing, he was mocking me for my mistakes. It is over, his stare said, get the hell out and never show yourself.

And so I wandered the streets of Metro Manila, seeking solace in the alleys hoping against hope that I would find no reminder of Ronald’s existence. Yet I failed miserably, every corner I turned he stood, every other billboard showed his emblem looming like Big Brother.  I was being watched, nay, I was being pursued. I know not why but he chased and chased. He was a foe not only proficient but also ruthless. He saw me beaten but he wanted me destroyed.

I walked around the streets now destitute. My hair had grown long, my stink insufferable, my misery unbearable. I shuffled about no longer remotely resembling the employee of the month for 12 months but now a broken man, insane and babbling about nuggets and fries and upsizing.

Months had passed since I was fired.

I decided to end it. So out on the streets of Metro Manila I sallied forth climbing on top of the Pink and Blue MMDA elevated walkway in the corner of North Avenue and EDSA. I was going to plunge into the stampeding traffic below and into my death.

He says “no thanks I’ll pass”. I ring him up for the bill for the 6pc McNuggets and Coke. He pays, I hand him his change.

MERALCO as the monopoly.

According to Criticisms of a Real Sane Genius Meralco, the electricity distribution company in the Philippines, is trying to merely pull a fast one on consumers. The newswires are burning with the imminent refund of a few billion pesos worth of refunds to consumers who have been overcharged by Meralco in recent years. (more…)

Books the solution to boredom

The semestral break has taken a toll on me. I have done nothing but mope around all day for how many days now. There are certain exceptiional days however, where I have had to move around the city doing errands and chores. While at Trinoma I decided to victimize the Powerbooks book store there. I bought a few books, 2 works in Filipino by Lualhati Bautista, Bata Bata Pa’no Ka Ginawa and Bulaklak ng City Jail, and another book by Upton Sinclair titled The Jungle.

These 2 books by Lualhat Bautista have a very feminist lean to them and both portray the plight of the Filipina in a very raw way, one is the story of a Filipina mother who has had two men leave her in the course of a few years, leaving her with two children and endless trials. The other is a story of a Filipina who was fooled by a philanderer into being his concubine. She was subsequently attacked by the wife and spent a few months in city jail. Her story while in jail and the various humiliations she had to undergo is made clean by the fact of the birth of her child from the man. Though these two stories have very gloomy tones these nonetheless manage to show the tenacity and resilience of the everyday Filipina, the people we call Mom, Sister, Girlfriend or Wife.

The other book that I bought is Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Set sometime in the 1900’s the story is about Jurgis Rudkus a Lithuanian immigrant to the United States of America. He is a country youth in Lithuania and is deceived by stories of wealth that can be had in the States. Jurgis, innocent as he was, went with the immigration and discovered first hand the difficulties of life in the yards of Chicago. As the story progresses he learns how to survive in the Jungle created by unbridled greed.

The one magical word.

October 5, 2008

Who would have thought that one word could do so much?

Fraud. Dismay. Trouble. Aggression. Difficulty. Inquiry. Dissatisfaction. Incompetence. Dismissal. This one word can mean each one of those mentioned and even more.

With so many applications, the word stretches with the mind and the situation.

It truly is the one magical word.

I’m off to hunt me some wabbits!

It was my sister’s birthday today and having consumed more than my fair share of pasta, pizza and iced tea my girlfriend and I decided to go for a walk. Finding ourselves in Timezone at Trinoma, we decided to play some games. House of the Dead 4 only wasted our money. The zombies were just too many, too fast and too strong to survive.

Its a good thing we found Big Buck Hunter. The objective of the game is to bring down a bull, or a male example of the animal you’re hunting. We went a huntin’ for moose. It was very , very difficult at first. I find it hard to believe that virtual big game could not be brought down with a well-placed shot to the rump. What was needed was a shot to the head, to the leg or to the neck to bring it down with one shot. I never thought hunting would be this exasperating and fulfilling!

BLAM! *click* BLAM! Down goes the moose!

It’s like the real thing minus the recoil and the heat/cold and the mosquitoes and other discomforts. Also you just have to pay the charge the machine has to take instead of paying for the hunting license.

It feels really good to take down big game. I’ve never shot at a live animal before and I don’t think I ever will while I’m alive. Several reasons come readily to mind: 1.) its expensive to hunt, you have to apply for a license etc.  2.)could you really shoot another creature for sport 3.) if I can’t eat it I’m not killing it 4.) I like my bed too much.

Though virtual hunting might pale in comparison to the thrill of the real hunt, I suggest we stick to the video game version. Its safer you won’t get gored, bitten, clawed or stomped by the creatures you should be hunting. Its cheaper, you don’t have to worry about gas, supplies, clothing etc. Its a lot more environmentally friendly and better on the conscience, I refuse to increase the number of animals killed on account of man’s activities. Its also obviously a waste of meat, who will eat moose or caribou or whatever? With all the meat the world is producing I don’t think killing a wild animal is absolutely necessary to stave off starvation.

Its ok to hunt. Just hunt using a light gun. Or shoot with a camera if you want it hardcore.

For those interested in Partnership Law

October 2, 2008

For the people who are interested in partnership law read Dean CLV’s blog on Partnership law. Its actually very new started only this year and could possibly end with the semester as well if he ceases to teach partnership law in 2nd year.

The blog reads like his book on sales, meaning to say its quite good.

There was another blog on Agency and Trusts but I think it was taken down.

Curiosity never killed the cat.

October 1, 2008

I keep wondering why curiosity killed the cat. Did the cat just cross the road without looking or what?

Curiosity is essential to learning. We must inquire in order to find out. By stifling curiosity we are stifling learning. Curiosity never killed the cat, stupidity did. As a parent or guardian or person with authority curious minds should not be suppressed but should be directed.

By all means let the child play, let him hurt himself, scrape himself and be scarred. Adults should be there only as safety nets and guide posts. They should play an active part in the development of the child but should not shield the child from experiences that will hurt him for now but teach him lessons to be used in the long run.

Curiosity never killed the cat, ignorance did.

A long hiatus.

It has been a while since I wrote anything here. I have had to return to school and was out for the greater part of the year.

From the midterms to the four weekends of September to the Finals the first semester in school always poses a great difficulty. The hiatus was coming, I knew it and everyone knew it. Tomorrow I return to Makati to finish my studies for ATP.

I’m also going to try to relocate but after a few hours I was hacking and coughing because of tobacco smoke. Everyone really should quit smoking. Its just bad for your health.

I have to finish all my backlog for all of my subjects. This semester is the one where I have been found least prepared and, in several instances, wanting.

I refuse to give up my aspirations of getting high marks and honors for academic performance. I will keep on thrashing and kicking until there is no more fight left in me.
