More real than real
October 26, 2008I was finally able to play Call of Duty 4 at home. It was great! At least the single player mode haven’t gotten around to playing it online or via lan.
I like the way Call of Duty 4 combines playability with overall cinematic quality. Its intense specially with levels that involve a lot of running before you run out of time and die or run before the heli leaves, etc. Take a look at these images that can be seen online of Call of Duty 4
The games of today are achieving a look of reality beyond imagining. A few decades ago seeing graphics on the screen instead of just plain text was something new. Now seeing jagged edges on in-game images are unheard of! In-Game graphics have gone forward leaps and bounds. Take for example GTA 4 and its likeness to New York City. I find that the images from GTA IV are a bit muddied up or flooded with too much light. It actually imparts a surreal beauty on the image instead of simply mimicking real life buildings Check out the GTA4 official website and you can find other pics spread all over the net.
The images look surreal and at some point in time I find that these remind me somewhat of pictures of monet. I just know that these are images that can be seen in everyday life but the effect of distorting it a little in order to highlight movement or a passage of time. I know its real but at the same time its through the lens of the artist that I see it.
Playing today’s video games is like staring at a panorama of reality seen through the eyes of the animators, programmers and artists. The overall effect of technology on the video game is to elevate it from a mere diversion into an interactive work of art. At least with well made games. The game should actually be able to immerse the player into the world as portrayed by the makers. I knew it that I was playing a winner when in “Crew Expendable” I was tilting along with the character’s view point as the ship breaks apart. I am talking of that kind of immersion wherein you forget that there are other people beside you, it becomes just you and the monitor and your hands on the keyboard and mouse.
Kudos to the makers of great and beautiful games.

Spanish guy! Yep tried it a few times already. I’m still having trouble shooting the other players when they run around so much. But yeah I think I was able to kill somebody with the knife.

Try playing multi player instead of single mission. Much more fun especially when you kill players using your knife. One Slice = Kill = Own
