Chapter IV: The Crucible

November 1, 2008

I never thought that death would feel this peaceful.

After I closed my eyes and leapt off, I thought that I had already hit the ground and had died.

Instead I felt as if I was floating. It was as if I was borne above the nether by many supportive hands. I was at peace.

Peace? I thought that those who committed suicide went to hell? Hell couldn’t be this peaceful!

Then I felt as if I was being set on a surface. “Here it comes” I thought. Still nothing.

“You are alive young one. This is not the after-life nor are you in a hospital. You are here with us. We have saved you from certain death.”

Wh - “Do not ask why. It will be revealed to you soon.”

As I opened my eyes I saw three men sitting before me. They were neither old nor young, yet they each exuded an air of antiquity. Each was bald, his own shining pate providing me with flashes of light with each nod of the head (flashes of brilliance!). Their skin was smooth, with neither line nor blemish. The beards they wore extended far beyond their chins, down to their chests and perhaps to the floor. Their nosehairs were long as well, done in a handlebar style of Yosemite Sam. Yet youthful their skin maybe and the baldness of their heads done as if by choice the color of their beards were white. White as if to suggest the wisdom that comes with reflection while aging. Their eyes also betrayed their age. With piercing gazes that showed a patina of sadness at my plight.

How old are the’ “We are older than you my friend.  We are time and fate. We are the will of the god of happiness poured out into these three vessels.”

Ok… They must be smoking cra- “No. We are not. And neither did you. You are not on anything.”

Okaaaay. Right. This is creeping me out. Three bald men. Weird talking bald men. No exit near me… Hmmm
